SAS Field Trip: Folsom Historic Canal Trail

Registration is required for this trip, and it will be limited to 20 participants. Please email Nicole to register.

Field Trip Leader: Nicole Barden

Join State Park Interpreter Nicole to explore a trail that will take us right up to the Folsom Prison fence line. We will be walking along the Historic Folsom Canal, which once provided water, diverted from what is now Lake Natoma, for the operation of the Folsom Powerhouse. This area is surprisingly birdy for being so close to Folsom. In the past we have regularly found Rufous-crowned Sparrow and Phainopepla. We may even get lucky and see a Black-throated Gray Warbler, Peregrine Falcon, or Bald Eagle. Open to all birding levels, this trip will be slow-paced, and we will be taking the time to appreciate bird behavior along the way. We will be listening for birds as much as looking for them and will be keeping an e-Bird list as we go. Beginning birders and young birders are encouraged to join. The trail will be unpaved, but relatively flat, with limited shade. Bring snacks and liquids. Restrooms are available at the meeting place.

Directions and confirmation of exact meeting location and time will be provided upon registration.
