Checklist of the Birds of the Sacramento Area
Revised in 2023, the Checklist of the Birds of the Sacramento Area contains information on the seasonal occurrence of 269 species which might reasonably be found in appropriate habitat in the checklist area. The area covered by this checklist extends from State Highway 12 on the south to State Highway 20 on the north, and to the 1000' contour in the foothills on both sides of the Sacramento Valley. A map and additional information on the checklist area can be found by clicking on the Checklist Area and Map button below.
Additional species information including a list of rare and exotic species not included on the checklist but recorded 10 or more times in the checklist area within the last 20 years is found by clicking on the Additional Species button.
A complete description of the codes and colors used in the bar graphs as well as examples of how to read these codes can be found by clicking on Checklist Key button.

Key to Bar Graphs
Color Codes
The colored columns of the graph display seasonal occurrence categories. These categories reflect each species' status in appropriate habitat, appropriate season, and appropriate time of day. The color codes are as follows:
Color | Description |
---|---|
Hard To Miss | |
Should Find | |
May Find | |
Hard To Find | |
Lucky To Find | |
Irruptive | |
Not Usually Found |
A Note on Irruptive Species
Irruptive (pale yellow) means that in certain years species occurrence is much higher. Hovering your cursor over the pale yellow box in the checklist will also show how likely the species is to be observed in a non-irruptive year.
Symbols Following Species’ Name
Two sets of symbols may immediately follow a species’ name in the first column.
An asterisk * indicates species which should be documented with a detailed description, photographs, etc., and submitted to the appropriate North American Birds county editor. You can find a list of county editors in Northern California at fog.ccsf.edu/~jmorlan/afn.html#nocal.
(L: Number) following a species’ name indicates that this species can best be found at the locality(ies) so numbered on the checklist's map. For example, Blue-winged Teal is followed by (L:10, 11, 18). This indicated Blue-winged Teal are more likely to be found at 10-Davis Wetlands, 11-Yolo Bypass, and 18-Bridgeway Island Pond.
Habitat Codes
In the second column, the habitat categories are listed in order of each species’ preference. For example, SWC indicates this species’ habitat preferences are Savannah followed by oak and pine Woodlands, and lastly Chaparral. The following codes may be found in the Habitat column, and indicate those habitats in which each species is likely to be found:
A - Aerial: usually seen in flight
C - Chaparral: dense foothill shrub lands
Cl - Cliffs: natural and artificial (dams, bridges, buildings)
F - Fields: Agriculture fields and pasture (also includes landfills)
H - Human habitation: cities, suburbs, and urban parks
M - Marshes: tule, cattails and other emergent vegetation (includes flooded rice fields)
Mu - Mudflats: flooded fields lacking emergent vegetation
O - Open water: lakes, rivers, creeks, ponds and sloughs
R - Riparian: trees and shrubs near shorelines of rivers, streams and ponds
S - Savannah: grasslands with scattered oaks
W - Woodland: open stands of oaks and foothill pine
wide - Widespread in a great variety of habitats
Nesting Codes
The third column provides information on breeding status in the checklist area.
N - known nester
RN - rare nester
? - suspected nester
FN - former nester, i.e. a species which previously nested in the area but apparently does so no longer.
Checklist Area
Situated at the confluence of two major rivers, Sacramento offers riparian woodland, marshes, and vast areas of agricultural land in the surrounding valley. In the foothills to the east and west are extensive grasslands, chaparral, and oak woodlands. This variety of habitats, together with mild winters, makes the Sacramento area one of North America's outstanding inland birding areas in terms of both species richness and total number of birds.
The area covered by the Checklist of Birds of the Sacramento Area extends from State Highway 12 on the south to State Highway 20 on the north, and to the 1000' contour in the foothills on both sides of the Sacramento Valley.
Using the Map
The number points on the map correlate with the number next to a species’ name in the checklist, written as (L: Number). This indicates that this particular species is more likely to be found at the specific location represented by the number. For example, Blue-winged Teal is followed by (L:10, 11, 18). This indicated Blue-winged Teal are more likely to be found at 10-Davis Wetlands, 11-Yolo Bypass, and 18-Bridgeway Island Pond.
For more information on the numbered locations click or the number on the map or right-facing arrow in a box in the upper left corner of the map. This will open an index for the map with a list of each number and the corresponding location. Clicking on the name of the location will give a description of the particular species that are more likely to be found at this location.
Additional Species Information
Species names and listed order follow the Clements Checklist 2023, including subsequent supplements. For additional information on abundance and seasonal occurrence of species within the Sacramento Checklist Area, please refer to the Checklist of the Birds of Yolo County, California (Rev. 2019) and A Field Checklist for Birds of the Cosumnes River Preserve, Sacramento County, California (Third Revision-2001).
Documented reports of species marked with an asterisk or designated as "lucky to find" on the graphs, species on the list of rarities, species found out of season, species nesting that are not yet confirmed nesters in this area, and species not mentioned in this checklist should be submitted to the appropriate North American Birds county editor. You can find a list of county editors in Northern California at fog.ccsf.edu/~jmorlan/afn.html#nocal.

Exotic Species
For the purpose of the Checklist of Birds in the Sacramento Region exotic species are non-native species that have not yet become naturalized or reached provisional status.
Naturalized species are species that are non-native, self-sustaining, breeding in the wild, persisting for many years, and not maintained through ongoing releases. Naturalized species are included on the checklist. Examples of naturalized species included on the checklist are European Starling, House Sparrow, and Eurasian Collared Dove.
Provisional exotic species are non-native species that are breeding in the wild, self-propagating, and have persisted for multiple years, but are not yet thought to be naturalized. As of 2023 the Mute Swan is a Provisional Species in the Sacramento Area. It is included on the checklist.
Escapee exotic species are non-native species that are known or suspected to be escaped or released, including those that have bred but don't yet fulfill the criteria for Provisional. The following Escaped Species have been recorded in the Sacramento Area at least ten times between 2003 and 2023: Graylag Goose, Egyptian Goose, Muscovy Duck, Mandarin Duck, Indian Peafowl. These birds are not included in the checklist.
