SAS Field Trip: Gray Lodge Wildlife Area

Registration is required for this field trip and will be limited to 8 participants. Please email Sonja to register.

Field Trip Leader: Sonja Sorbo

This winter trip offers fantastic opportunities to view waterfowl, and it’s one of the more reliable places near Sacramento to see Blue-winged Teal. Sometimes thousands of geese take flight over the water to the delight of birders. Other species to expect for the day include passerines, wetland birds, and raptors. We will spend several hours walking about 2 miles on trails on graded and level ground. After lunch, we will take a drive around the auto loop. If there’s time and if the group agrees, we’ll drive to a nearby area looking for Sandhill Cranes, grassland birds, and raptors.

This trip is great for birders of all skill levels, and it’s a terrific opportunity for beginners to observe several different duck species.

NOTE: A Land’s Pass is required for each person entering Gray Lodge Wildlife Area. You can purchase a pass on arrival to Gray Lodge, or by phone at 800 - 565-1458. The fee has been $5 in the past; bring small bills in case there has been a fee increase. Another option is to go to the CDFW (California Dept of Fish and Wildlife) website at ca.wildlifelicense.com and “continue as a guest” and select 2025 Lands Pass. (Anglers or hunters who have in hand a California license for 2025 are admitted free).

Meeting place, directions, and other details will be provided after registration.
