About the Presentation

The Waterbird Habitat Project began one year ago with the mission of reducing fishing gear injuries to waterbirds on the American River by increasing awareness and removing decades of accumulated fishing gear from the river. These activities led to an inspiring tale of discovery and action. A community has come together to improve waterbird safety on the American River. Future goals include a Parkway-wide project using creative solutions to increase the safety of waterbirds living in areas of high angling activity and a statewide awareness campaign. In addition, a year-long study of waterbirds in the 45-acre side-channel pond on the river has revealed a thriving waterbird habitat, including a rare hybrid duck and a few uncommon visitors!
