Leon Schoenhoff recently asked education@sacramentoaudubon.org: What is this bird?
After confirming with Merlin Bird ID that this was a Western Bluebird, we learned more about this shot and others Leon shared. See Leon’s comments and the Western Bluebird series below.
I took the image from one of number of video clips I took with my Canon 80D SLR from my home office window. Each year, the mother and father use this bird house mounted on a Bay Laurel tree and I setup a tripod with my camera when they begin feeding their clutch. This year, there are three mouths to feed and they are terribly busy trying to keep them fed. It seems the mother does the morning shift and the father takes a shift from then on, with the mother occasionally joining in the feeding. The clutch is very vocal in calling out to the pair and clamor for food when a parent arrives.
Leon lives in Fair Oaks near the major intersection of Hazel and Madison Avenues.
